Exhibition at the Italian Cultural Institute, Sydney
The Italian Cultural Institute in Sydney is proud to present the exhibition Vico Magistretti – Architecture & Design, a comprehensive exploration of the sixty-year career of the renowned Italian architect and designer, Vico Magistretti. The exhibition will open on 13 September 2024 and will be on view until 18 October 2024.
Curated by Fondazione Magistretti with Maria Vittoria Capitanucci and organized in collaboration with the Embassy of Italy in Canberra, this exhibition delves deeply into the two inseparable aspects of Magistretti's work: architecture and design. Through a rich collection of drawings, blueprints, photographs and project reports, visitors will have the opportunity to discover both Magistretti’s most iconic and lesser-known works, gaining insight into his approach to urban planning and the historical-cultural context that shaped his creations.
Structured into three main sections: biography, architectural works, and design objects, the exhibition also celebrates Magistretti’s contributions to industrial design, featuring original sketches and product catalogues that have become symbols of Italian design. The exhibition will highlight pieces such as chairs, lamps, tables, beds, and bookshelves, offering a rare glimpse into the creative process behind these timeless objects.
A special focus is given to Magistretti’s professional collaborations with prominent Italian and international design companies, including Artemide, Cassina, De Padova, Flou and Oluce, some of whose products will be on display. These partnerships, cultivated over more than fifty years, played a crucial role in defining and promoting the success of Italian design on a global scale.
An exquisite sample of iconic furniture pieces will be on display, loaned by Italian brands such as Oluce (Euroluce), Artemide (Inlite Australia), Cassina (Mobilia) and De Padova (Boffi Studio Sydney), offering a comprehensive journey into the essence of Vico Magistretti's prolific and eclectic career.
Vico Magistretti, born in Milan in 1920 into a family of architects, made significant contributions to the reconstruction of Milan post-World War II, with notable projects such as INA-Casa and the QT8 district. In the 1960s, his focus shifted to housing and living themes, while his collaborations with furniture manufacturers established him as one of the fathers of Italian design. His works are celebrated in major museums worldwide, including MoMA in New York and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.
Following Magistretti’s passing in September 2006, his studio was converted into the Fondazione Studio Museo Vico Magistretti, a museum dedicated to the study and promotion of his work.
