Melbourne Design Week (MDW) is a yearly 11-day event that embraces the diverse disciplines of design, engaging in insightful talks, captivating tours, inspiring exhibitions, and immersive workshops.
This celebration serves as a platform to both celebrate and critically examine design in its various forms, including communication design, industrial design, service design, gaming, architecture, landscape architecture, urban design, fashion, craft, and functional art.
MDW fosters a collaborative environment, bringing together designers, educators, thinkers, and businesses to exchange ideas, showcase and promote new creations, and contemplate the potential of design as a positive force in an increasingly intricate and uncertain world.
At this year’s Melbourne Design Week, in collaboration with our partners ARUP, Woods Bagot, Woven Image, EMAC and Living Edge we brought to the design community {Whose Bright Idea?}, an Immersive Installation and Chain Of Custody, Understanding Your Responsibility Panel Talk.
What is our perception of good design? Is it solely focused on aesthetics, or does sustainability play an equally important role? With {Whose Bright Idea?}, we wanted to engage and create an unforgettable installation crafted by our collaborative effort from ARUP, Woods Bagot, Euroluce, Woven Image, and Emac. The thought-provoking installation aimed to explore these very questions and promote the shared values of the team in delivering sustainable solutions through thoughtful design. By taking viewers on an immersive sensory expedition, encompassing sight, sound, and touch, the installation stimulated contemplation and encouraged meaningful discussions.
Buildings have a significant impact on carbon emissions, contributing significantly to the overall carbon footprint. In order to align with the climate change goals of limiting global warming to below 2 degrees Celsius, there is a growing consideration of reducing emissions by half every decade, which is seen as a crucial solution.
The panel talk comprising speakers Tim Hunt, Associate Lighting Designer at ARUP, Phoebe Settle, Associate Interior Designer at Woods Bagot, Guy Walsh, Sustainable Strategist at Living Edge, Prue Francis, Strategic Account Manager at Woven Image, Ryan Macwhirter, Founder at EMAC, and moderator Patrick Louire, Brand and Distribution Manager at Euroluce, discusses the design industry, being at the forefront and facing increasing legislative and market pressures to address these challenges and how we are able to create sustainable outcomes through collaboration and how the design sector can work with their clients in the future.
