FLOS AT THE SALONE DEL MOBILE 2019
The space, designed by architects Calvi Brambilla, welcomed visitors with an illustrated wall where iconic designers and their works came to life through an interactive, touch-sensitive experience. Inside, Flos’ focus was clearly to the outdoors – complimented by an array of new interior lighting systems and the celebration of icons from the past.
2019 sees Mario Bellini’s Chiara floor lamp turning 50, and in recognition has been re-launched with Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni’s Bulbo lamp being released for the first time since it was designed in 1957. Contemporary classics were also reissued with Michael Anastassiades’ IC and Captain Flint floor lamps presented, now suitable for outdoor use.
Combining their technical abilities with the aesthetics of some of the world’s leading designers, Flos also previewed a selection of lighting systems. Anastassiades’ My Circuit and Coordinates systems blend sculpture and function while the Bouroullec Brother’s Belt sees LED lighting incorporated into a stunning weave of leather straps. These systems take architectural lighting technologies and apply them to products more suited to hospitality or residential situations though Piero Lissoni’s Diversion combines track lighting with a flexible suspended grid that can be configured in multiple ways.
Of course, new stand-alone lighting was also presented with elegant outdoor luminaires by Philippe Starck, Patricia Urquiola, Nendo and Antonio Citterio being shown – all of which would be perfectly at home indoors. In stepping away from the presentation, through the animated walkway, Flos’ connection to design history in a contemporary context is clearly demonstrated as its commitment to developing new ways of lighting.
