The Coupé series, designed by Joe Colombo, was initially conceived as a variation of the Spider family, created by the same designer, of which it has kept its base and stem. The simple, ingenious mechanism that connects the stem to the head makes it possible to direct the beam in several directions, by moving the dome up, down and sideways.

Joe Colombo (1930–1971) was an Italian modernist designer and architect. He is best known for his futuristic furniture designs, including his modular 1970 Elda Chair and the 1948 “Bubble” Chair, as well as his revolutionary lighting designs. A visionary and futuristic designer with works including the Coupé collection, Fresnel and Acrilica. Colombo also produced innovative industrial and product design, including typewriters, televisions, radios, desks, and kitchenware. He was one of the most influential figures in Italian industrial design in the 1960s and 1970s.
